        How to use the Library
Elizabeth J. Plummer Memorial Library

The parish library is a memorial to Elizabeth J. Plummer, a lifelong Montgomery County resident, who joined St. James with her husband Lawrence and their four children. Betsy was active in numerous programs at the church including the Vestry and prayer fellowship.

Betsy died suddenly in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in May, 1981 while celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary with Larry. She is buried in the
St. James Churchyard.

In her memory, Larry donated $5,000 to the church to establish the library, a fitting living memorial to a lover of books, an avid reader and a truly Christian woman.

The Plummer Library was dedicated in May,1983 with approximately 500 books. The collection has grown to over 4,000 books at the present time. The Plummer Library provides books, periodicals and audio-visual software that will support the teaching, preaching, counseling, evangelistic and outreach ministries of St. James Church.

The specific purposes and objectives for the selection of materials for the Plummer Library are:

·        to provide a well-balanced collection of books, periodicals and audio-visual materials which aid in developing informed and intelligent people who function as lay ministers of the Church
·        to serve all who come seeking development of the spiritual capacities and a growing expression of their Christian faith
·        to aid in developing a deeper understanding of ourselves and our role in the community and the world
·        to participate effectively in the Church program as we strive to meet the needs of adults in their personal journey and group relationships
·        to provide children and youth with library materials most meaningful for their Christian growth and development, for aiding in their personal adjustments and for developing desirable social attitudes and values
·        to assist the Church School educational program with resources and supplemental materials
·        to provide library materials to aid in the wholesome use of leisure time for the enrichment of personal living
·        to provide library materials that support Adult Education topics which are of current interest
·        to align the library purpose with the purpose/goals of St. James Church.

USING THE PLUMMER LIBRARY

The Plummer Library operates on the honor system. There are no set hours of operation. The library may be used at any time the church is open. Anyone attending church at St. James is eligible to use and sign materials out of the library. Members of the community who may attend functions at St. James are also encouraged to use the library.

Each book (and video) has a sign-out card in a pocket at the back of the book. Sign your name on the card as well as the current date. Books may be signed out for one month. Place the sign-out card in the small box to the right of the card catalog. You will see other sign-out cards there. Please place your card on top. You do not have to file it in order with the other cards. When returning books, please place them in the “Return Books” box on top of the card catalog. You do not have to replace the sign-out card and please do not shelve the returned books yourself. Sign-out procedures are posted on the wall behind the card catalog.

Unlike most libraries, Plummer Library reference books may be signed out. The reference books have a blue dot on the spine and also pockets and sign-out cards in the back.

The library subscribes to a number of periodicals. There is no particular sign-out procedure for magazines. If you see something you like, please just take it, read it and return it at your convenience.

If anyone is interested in serving as a library volunteer, we can always use help straightening shelves, re-shelving books, filing cards and cataloguing.

Thank you for your support of the Elizabeth J. Plummer Memorial Library.
